All I Need

I’m the next act
Waiting in the wings

I’m an animal
Trapped in your hot car

I am all the days
That you choose to ignore

You are all I need
I’m in the middle of your picture
Lying in the reeds

I’m a moth
Who just wants to share your light

I’m just an insect
Trying to get out of the night

I only stick with you
Because there are no others

You are all I need
I’m in the middle your picture
Lying in the reeds

It’s all wrong
It’s all right
It’s all wrong

lyrics, music

Melt My Heart To Stone

Right under my feet is air made of bricks
It pulls me down, turns me weak for you
I find myself repeating like a broken tune
And I’m forever excusing your intentions
And I give in to my pretendings
Which forgive you each time
Without me knowing
They melt my heart to stone

Each and every time I turn around to leave
I feel my heart begin to burst and bleed
So desperately I try to link it with my head
But instead I fall back to my knees
As you tear your way right through me
I forgive you once again
Without me knowing
You’ve burnt my heart to stone

And I hear your words that I made up
You say my name like there could be an ‘us’
I best tidy up my head I’m the only one in love
I’m the only one in love

Single Awareness Day Playlist #2

It’s almost that time, ladies and gentlemen of the single variety. Valentine’s Day is coming to a close. You’ve made it this far unscathed, I assume. All that stands between you and another regulation Sunday is that dreaded late evening stretch of time most commonly reserved for pensive moods. Instead of trying to avoid the inevitable, take this opportunity to purge yourself of all the feels still lurking around in your vacant heart. Wipe off your mascara, put on your comfy pants, and crank up the second edition of Sob fest tunes to get your catharsis started.

Accidental Babies- Damien Rice
My experience with first love wasn’t a terribly great one. As in most cases it crashed and burned dramatically, fused with all of the energy and idiocy of youth. Afterwards I found myself thinking about how I would never feel that way for any one else, happy because it was not functional but also a little sad because it was exhilarating. I’m not sure where I’m going with this but this song makes me think about first love.

And I know I make you cry. I know sometimes you wanna die, but do you really feel alive without me? Does he drive you wild or just mildly free? What about me?

Shadowboxer- Fiona Apple
Fiona is on another level. She is so far ahead of me on a talent level that I often experience crippling inferiority when I listen to her music. Her dance moves and ability to smuggle pot across state lines may be questionable but her ability to create a masterful song on toxic love is absolute.

So darlin’ I just wanna say, just in case I don’t come through, I was on to every play; I just wanted you.

Easy To Love- The Jezabels
Anyone who doesn’t fit a mold or is more complex than the norm can relate to this song. Before I defeated all of my self-esteem issues in one fell swoop I would lay in bed at night after a date and try to will myself into being more easily satisfied with love, people, the world, etc. To no avail, I might add.

Just let me be easy to love.

Dusk & Summer- Dashboard Confessional
A song that exudes all the feels of a summer afternoon and samples all the wisdom of an aged Chris Carrabba. He has this way of getting you to reminisce longingly about a relationship that you may have never experienced. I have been known to teeth-kiss on occasion so I pretend it’s about me. Seasonal love will always rip my heart at the seams.

She said, “no one is alone the way you are alone.” And you held her looser than you would have if you ever could have known that some things tie your life together.

Kreuzberg- Bloc Party
This song is particularly relevant for my age. The exhaustive search to find relational happiness. You go through bouts of hope followed by feeling defective and then cumulating in existential queries about the actuality of “Love.”

What is this love? Why can I never hold it? Did it really run out in the strangers’ bedrooms?

My Backwards Walk- Frightened Rabbit
A song about the conflicting feelings one experiences with an on-again-off-again relationship. I need to forget you but I need you to remind me just one more time why I need to forget you. The tone is somber but the clever imagery and juxtapositions in the lyrics might just cheer you back up.

I’m working on my faults and cracks, filling in the blanks and gaps, and when I write them out they don’t make sense. I need you to pencil in the rest.

Cornerstone- Arctic Monkeys
I love this song. It is always in my 25 Top Played. I remember crying when they played it on tour with the Black Keys in 2012, but still trying to take a video of it on my phone. That did not turn out well. Typical post-break up song about being haunted by the ghosts of significant others past.

I’m worried I’ll forget your face, and I’ve asked everyone; I’m beginning to think I imagined you all along

Last Kiss- Taylor Swift
What I love about early TS was the unashamed vulnerability in her lyrics. It was as if she paid no thought for how people would respond to lines that made her sound crazy. You had an emotional experience listening to her because the material was heartfelt. This song sticks out to me in particular for its candid description of post-Werewolf Taylor fallout.

I don’t know how to be something you miss. I feel you forget me like I used to feel you breathe.

Thinkin Bout You- Frank Ocean
Frank Ocean is truly one of a kind. I still remember sitting in my bed listening to Channel Orange when it first came out and thinking, “Where has this guy been hiding?” He’s a genius and this song is perfection. There is a live version of this song when he performed on SNL that features John Mayer on guitar that you should Google, like now.

Do you not think so far ahead? Cuz I’ve been thinking about forever

Konstantine- Something Corporate
This is my ultimate sad song. If I even just hear the first few piano keys I’ll think to myself, “Oh no, here we go…” as I get pulled into a 9-minute long emotional whirlpool. Okay, more like 18-minute long because I can’t listen to it just once. An old boyfriend used to change the lyrics to “I can spell ‘confusion’ with a ‘Cait’ and I can like it.”

It’s always you in my big dreams.
They’ll never hurt you like I do.
Did you know I miss you?
